Adrian Vanson, a painter of considerable repute, served as King’s Painter from 1584. His works, such as the 1585 portrait of King James VI, demonstrate his skill. Vanson’s role meant he painted numerous members of the Scottish aristocracy. Meanwhile, the influence of the Italian Renaissance was spreading throughout Scotland, partly through the work of Dutch painters. Portrait painting became especially popular among the wealthy elite.

Behind the Remarkable Art World Discovery

The use of advanced imaging techniques is revolutionizing art history. These methods allow researchers to peer beneath layers of paint. They can reveal preliminary sketches, alterations, or even entirely different compositions. Therefore, such discoveries offer invaluable insights into an artist's process and the history of a piece.

The X-Ray Technology That Revealed History

X-ray technology provides a non-invasive way to examine the internal structure of paintings. Different pigments absorb x-rays at varying rates. This creates a detailed image of underlying layers. In this instance, the x-rays penetrated the visible portrait of Sir John Maitland. They clearly showed an earlier painting concealed beneath. This earlier work was, astonishingly, a hidden Queen Mary portrait.
