Loki has come to an end – for now at least, as it was confirmed that the show will return for Season 2. And while that is certainly happy news, sadly, for fans of the show, Kate Herron, who directed all of Season 1, won’t be back for the second season. Herron recently explained to Uproxx that there were discussions about her returning, but ultimately, she felt, “I’ve done my part” and “It’s a massive undertaking because we ran it like a six-hour film and I just gave it everything.” There certainly was a ton included in Loki’s first season, which found the popular title character — or a variant of him at the least — jumping through time and across worlds, and coming face to face with an eclectic group of characters, many other variants included, along the way. Herron spoke to Fandom about the Season 1 finale — which set the stage for Kang the Conqueror by bringing Jonathan Majors (who will be playing that Marvel villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) into the MCU in a big way — plus Loki and Sylvie’s brewing romance, a certain cameo, Easter eggs, and the audience response to the characters on the show.

About this moment

The Marvel Cinematic Universe was forever changed by the reality-bending antics of the trickster god, but the creative force behind the camera is ready for a new chapter. Director Kate Herron recently opened up about the emotional core of the series, specifically the complex and polarizing relationship between Loki and Sylvie. As fans processed the jaw-dropping revelations of the Season 1 finale, Herron shared insights into the creative decisions that shaped the Variants quest for identity and purpose across the multiverse. While the series confirmed a second season is on the horizon, the director revealed she will not be returning to the helm. Describing the production as a massive undertaking akin to a six-hour feature film, Herron explained that she poured her entire creative energy into the project and feels she has completed her mission with these characters. Her departure marks a bittersweet moment for the fandom, as her unique vision defined the aesthetic and emotional stakes of the show. The finale set the stage for total multiversal chaos, leaving audiences to wonder how future directors will handle the fallout of Sylvie’s choices. Do you think Loki and Sylvie are truly meant for each other, or was their bond doomed from the start? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
